Creative workshops help newcomer children feel at home - Royal Talens
Since October 2024, Stichting Nieuw in Nederland has been organizing weekly workshops for newcomer children aged 9 to 14. The project, which is ongoing, reaches approximately 80 children every week across six locations in the Netherlands. The workshops are designed to help children feel welcome in their new environment and to introduce them to Dutch culture, customs and society. By offering a structured and supportive setting, the project creates space for learning, curiosity and personal development.

Creative workshops with professionals and guest teachers

Each week, guest teachers and professionals are invited to share their work and experiences. Together with the children, they explore different professions and fields of work. Alongside these introductions, the programme includes a wide range of creative and cultural activities, such as music and visual arts.

Arts education and creative expression

Art played an important role throughout the programme. One memorable activity took place during the Summer School 2025, when children created leporellos as part of an art project that encouraged storytelling and visual expression.

Weekly workshops across six locations

The project operates at six different locations, each with its own location manager. These managers prepare the weekly lessons and are present during the workshops, ensuring continuity and a familiar face for the children. Several illustrators and guest teachers contribute to the programme, bringing in diverse perspectives and expertise.

Building confidence and discovering new talents

According to the organisation, many children expressed how happy they were to discover new talents, meet inspiring professionals and feel seen in their new surroundings. These moments underline the importance of creative and cultural activities in supporting children during a period of transition.

More information about the organisation can be found on the website of Stichting Nieuw in Nederland.
