From comics to sunsets: creative learning with IMC Weekendschool - Royal Talens
From 7 to 21 June 2026, 42 pupils aged 10 to 12 took part in a creative project organised by IMC Weekendschool in Amsterdam Southeast. Through comics, film and painting, the pupils explored different ways to develop their ideas and express themselves creatively.

Creating comics and short films

The pupils began by creating their own comics and developing visual stories. They then used their comics as the basis for short films, combining drawing, storytelling and moving images. The project involved Daan Brand, whose work focuses on photography and animation, and George Adegite of SiMSALABiMS, introducing the pupils to different creative disciplines.

Painting a sunset step by step

During the following week, the pupils learned how to paint a sunset by following step-by-step instructions. Sketchbooks, canvases and markers provided by the Royal Talens Foundation were used to add colour to the comics and create the sunset artworks. One participant captured an important part of the experience: “Miss, in order to create something nice you have to trust the process”.

Discovering talents through creative education

The activities gave the pupils opportunities to experiment with visual expression and develop their creative skills. This reflects the aim of IMC Weekendschool to help young people discover their preferences, talents and future possibilities. The project also supported the Royal Talens Foundation’s mission to give children and young adults access to creative learning through practical experience.
