To help you determine the size and composition of your work, you can print the PDF of the example. You can easily create a grid with this.

Overview of the steps

  • 00:06 Use the printed PDF as a support to draw the grid. Use the HB graphite pencil for this. You can also use a ruler to make your own grid like in the video.
  • 01:30 Start sketching the Samurai. Again, you can use the PDF as an example to determine shapes and placement. Divide the helmet and other parts into rough shapes and add more and more details.
  • 04:31 Use the Koi Brush Pen to trace over the pencil lines.
  • 08:23 Applying multiple layers creates shadow effects and more depth in your drawing.
  • 11:25 Take your Pigma Micron and use it to add more detail and contrast.
  • 17:58 Use the Gelly Roll Moonlight in Light Warm Gray to draw the lines in the background.

Our expert - Cliff Deun

Cliff Deun (@cliffdeunart) is an illustrator and painter from Amsterdam. Inspired by movies since childhood, he used to pause VHS tapes to sketch characters like Darth Vader and the T-Rex from Jurassic Park. Though he studied advertising, he found his true passion in illustration, adopting a "less is more" approach. After leaving advertising, he shifted focus to design, murals, and eventually full-time illustration. Known for bold lines and geometric shapes, Cliff enjoys creating portraits of people with strong, character-filled features.
