Justin Vining: "Van Gogh once said: 'There is no blue without yellow and orange'. I bring this concept into every painting I create, using complimentary colours to develop dynamic compositions full of rich colour, life, and movement.
It is very rare that I actually look at photographic references to paint or draw from. Rather, I enjoy being able to sit in front of a blank canvas with nothing other than some brushes, paints and my imagination. At this point I have a whole collection of paint brushes but there are three I Could not live without, a #12 flat, a 3/4" flat, and a #6 round.
There are some artists who do not use much black in their work or even at all, especially with watercolors, but I have found that increasing the richness of black in my paintings makes the rest of the colours appear more saturated and bold."
