Yellow ochre by Mariella Agois
During my work I like to be led by a number of factors that help to guide me; both at a physical and a psychological level. My palette contains many colours, but Yellow ochre has a special property: it goes well with a great many colours. It is a good basic colour for when I put down the preliminary picture. Ochre does not get in the way of the arrangement of the composition.
You could say that it is a very submissive and generous colour. It does not take things over. It makes it possible to put down a well-organised composition right up to the moment when you decide whether or not to leave it as it is, change it, use it as a pure colour or to make it more neutral by mixing it. Of the many paintings that I have made, I think my most successful ones have been those in which I have used Yellow ochre.
